History of the WAA and eMetrics:

Way back in the Internet olden days of the 1990s Jim Sterne co-authored a white paper called E-Metrics - Business Metrics For The New Economy. That led to book and that led to a conference.

In 2002 the first eMetrics Summit was launched in Santa Barbara, California. Those of us doing our best to glean insight from website data were thrilled to discover that we were not the only ones who understood the language and the possibilities and the difficulties. We shared the same hopes and fears and battled the same dragons. We had finally found like minds and kindred spirits.

In 2003, we were all hoping that all of the answers to all of our problems would tumble out of these wonderful new web analytics tools. The focus was "Page Tags vs. Log Files". New technologies were emerging and the vendors paid very close attention.

The 2004 eMetrics Summit was the birth place of the Web Analytics Association (WAA). Bryan Eisenberg, Andrew Edwards and Jim Sterne instigated the founding with the help of Greg Drew, Rand Schulman, Andrea Hadley and Seth Romanow. The inaugural Board of Directors was formed and the Association was incorporated as a not for profit in July 2004, then officially launched in February of 2005.

Since the birth of the WAA in 2004, the eMetrics Summit acted as the unofficial meeting place and conference to WAA members, committees and the Board of Directors. As the eMetrics Marketing Optimization Summit grew to six events around the world, so did the WAA’s visibility, membership and programs.

In 2007, the relationship between the WAA and eMetrics was formalized through three independent agreements:

  1. eMetrics and WAA Base Camp Workshop Agreement:

In January of 2007 the WAA and eMetrics entered an agreement for the production and delivery of WAA Base Camp workshops internationally.

  2. eMetrics and WAA Sponsorship Sales Agreement:

In December 2007 the WAA and eMetrics entered an agreement where eMetrics would act as the official sponsorship sales organization of the WAA.

  3. eMetrics and WAA Cross-sponsorship Agreement:

In December 2007 the WAA and eMetrics entered an official agreement to mutually support and promote the products and services of each organization and the eMetrics Marketing Optimization Summit became the Official conference of the Web Analytics Association.
